Mathematics
Children are born with what Dr. Montessori called a "mathematical mind" - naturally exploring patterns, order, and relationships in their world. Through hands-on materials, we nurture this innate ability into a love of mathematics.
“The mathematical mind is a mind which is especially interested in mathematics…It is a fact that most of the children in our Montessori Schools do achieve great enthusiasm in doing mathematics. It is the preparation of their minds which enables them to derive this pleasure.”

A mathematical mind
The carefully designed Montessori materials help develop essential mathematical skills through order, concentration, repetition, and precision. Starting with sensory exploration, children progress naturally from concrete experiences to abstract mathematical understanding.

More than numbers
Mathematics in our classrooms nurtures essential life skills alongside numerical understanding. As children work with our materials, they develop concentration, logical thinking, and problem-solving abilities - skills that benefit all areas of learning.
0 - 3 years
Mathematics in the Nido and Infant Community
Even our youngest children are developing mathematical awareness through their everyday experiences. From babies exploring spatial awareness through movement to toddlers discovering sorting and matching, these natural activities lay the groundwork for future mathematical learning. Through simple activities like arranging objects, stacking blocks, and exploring shapes, children begin to understand fundamental mathematical concepts like space, order, and patterns.

Mathematics in the Children's House
Dr. Montessori designed her mathematical materials to nurture the development of the child’s Mathematical Mind, starting with concrete materials before introducing abstract concepts. The materials are structured, sequential, and precise, supporting a gradual transition from sensory exploration to abstract understanding.
Language of mathematics
Through activities like sorting, cooking, and reading, children develop the vocabulary needed to express mathematical ideas and understand more complex concepts.
Preparation for mathematics
Activities like cooking and threading develop fine motor skills, focus, and understanding of sequence - essential foundations for mathematical learning.
Quantities and symbols (1 to 10)
Using materials like Number Rods and Sandpaper Numbers, children connect physical quantities with numbers, including the important concept of zero.
Decimal system
The Golden Bead Material introduces children to the decimal system, helping them understand place value and perform basic operations.
Language of numbers (Larger than 10)
Children explore numbers beyond 10 using Ten and Teen Boards, learning precise mathematical language and number patterns.
Counting (continuation)
Children continue to count up to 100 and beyond using materials like Teen Boards and the Hundred Board, discovering number sequences and patterns.
Mathematical operations
Through concrete materials, children explore addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in meaningful ways.
Large numbers (beyond 1000)
Children discover numbers beyond 1000 using bead chains and other materials, visualising and understanding larger quantities.
Memorisation
Children memorise number facts through hands-on materials like the Multiplication Bead Board and charts, gradually internalising basic operations.
Geometry
Children explore shapes, sizes, and angles using hands-on materials, building a deep understanding of geometric concepts like symmetry and interrelationships.
Introduction to Algebra
Materials like the Binomial and Trinomial Cubes help children grasp fundamental algebraic concepts through hands-on exploration.
Time and sequence
Children learn about time and sequence through daily routines, class calendars, and activities like folding clothes, reinforcing the importance of order in tasks.
Fractions
Fraction work uses visual tools like Fraction Inserts and Skittles to help children understand whole numbers, halves, thirds, and quarters in practical ways.
Where numbers come to life
At Building Futures Montessori, mathematics isn't just about numbers - it's about discovery, understanding, and joy. Come see how our materials and approach spark your child's natural love of mathematical thinking.
